From there on, there are dark green forests reaching out in all directions, cut by the sparkle of river waters. There are places where rivers are so wide that you cannot see the opposite shore. And strange places like the Anavilhanas Archipelago, with more than 400 inslands, where trees drop their leaves as to perspire less and where the forest fattens the fish. The Amazon accounts for more than 40% of Brazil's territory, but only 5% of its population. There are more than 4000 species of plants, including the best woods for construction and furniture-making, and the marvelous orchids that grow along the river banks, which are periodically taken over by the water. Then there are the "Victoria Regias", with their immense circular leaves and giant pink and white flowers.
This is the habitat or a profusion of animal species, many of which have not yet been classified. The local mammals are small in size compared to those from Africa and Asia. A city with good hotels and fascinating boat rides on the river. On the left bank of the Rio Negro is Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. The city and its surrounding areas went through a prosperous era from 1890 to 1920, thanks to the "rubber boom". Great public works were undertaken at that time, including the construction of the main avenue on a landfill, floating docks to receive the world's largest ships, and lavish buildings like the Amazon Theater. Here some of Europe's greatest drama and opera companies have already performed. Today, Manaus is a city of modern hotels and restaurants, where the favorite dishes are river fishes like "tucunaré" and the "pirarucu". A trip to see the houses built on top of wood structures, "palafitas" (piles), in the acquatic jungle - where the river has flowded the forest and fish swin in water logged branches - is well worth your while. Or you can take a boat ride to the famous "Meeting of the waters" where the dark and limpid Negro River meets but does not blend for many miles with the heavy, muddy waters of the Solimoes River. This meeting form the Amazon River.

  Attractions
 Meeting of the Waters

The Amazon river is formed by the meeting between the Solimões River (a adobe water) and the Black River (dark water), with waters running together without mixing. The explanation for the phenomenon that generates this beautiful spectacle can be in the factors of density, temperature and speed, very varied from one to the other river.

Boi Manaus: the City Anniversary Party

Whoever comes to Manaus in the month of October is welcome to a great party. Not the ordinary party that the hospitable and homelike city throws to welcome its visitors from all over the world whether on business or tourism. It is the Boi Manaus festivities, an event promoted by the City Administration hall to celebrate October 24, the Anniversary of Manaus, the date the city was raised to the category of city. The beat and rhythm of the toadas (tunes) holds the city during the whole year, but it is at this time that the Boi-Bumbá assumes its condition of official beat. The whole festival takes three consecutive days, bringing to the Cultural Center – the Samba Arena (Sambódromo), more than 150 thousand people.

 The Amazonas Opera House

The history of the Amazonas Opera House begins in 1881, when the member of the House of Representatives A. J., Fernandes Júnior, submitted a project for the construction of a masonry Opera House, in the City of Manaus. The Provincial Assembly of Amazonas approved the proposal and discussions about the construction of the building began to take place. Manaus, living at the peak of the Rubber Cycle, was one of the most prosperous cities in the world, impelled by the wealth of the latex tree, a highly prized commodity by the European and American industries. The city needed a place where foreign performing arts companies could present their shows and the construction of the Opera House became, thus, a way to supply the demand of that time.

 Rio Negro Palace

Constructed to be the residence of a rich rubber trader, the German businessman Waldemar Scholtz, the Rio Negro Palace was inaugurated at the end of the 19th Century and became known at the time of its construction as Palacete Schotlz (The Scholtzl’s Small Palace). In 1911, the building was mortgaged to Colonel Luiz da Silva Gomes, a rich rubber tycoon at that time, who rent it to the State. The place, in addition to being the State Government Administration, became also the official Governor’s residence. In 1918, the State had definitly purchased the building, which began to be called from there on Palácio Rio Negro (Rio Negro Palace).

 Lake Janauari Ecological Park

Located on the border of Negro River, about an hour from Manaus by boat, Lake Janauari Ecological Park has an area of nine thousand acres of dry land forests, low lands and igapós (flooded forest). The boat rides to the park, are offered daily by the main travel agencies, with departures in the morning, and returns at the end of the afternoon. The packages usually includes regional lunch in a typical restaurant and also, a visit to the Meeting of the Waters (spectacular junction of the Negro and Solimões Rivers), a refreshing tour in canoes around the lakes and streams of the area.

 The Ponta Negra Park

The Ponta Negra beach, located 13 km away from downtown Manaus, was in the past inhabited by the Manáo Indians. This is the explanation about where the name "Manaus" came from. Today, urbanized by the City Administration, Ponta Negra has been provided with the infrastructure compatible with its purpose of being an urban park and one of the most important tourist attractions of the city. The comfort of the restaurants with their typical dishes, the beach with its fine sand and lukewarm water, the safety of the parking lots, the large sidewalks paved with hydraulic tiles, the sodium vapor night lighting, currently the most modern system, have made the Ponta Negra Cultural, Sport & Leisure Park a reference as far as entertainment is concerned for the population of Manaus and one of the most modern tourist complexes.

 The Manaus Harbor

The Manaus Harbor, located on the left banks of the Negro river, shows a peculiar and unique architecture in Brazil. Projected by the British, it features fixed piers and floating wharfs, built to stand to the annual phenomenon of the seasonal rising and lowering of the water level of the Negro river, thus facilitating ship anchorage at any time of the year. The history of the Manaus Harbor is intimately connected to the rubber economic cycle, between 1880 and 1910, times when the extraction of rubber spelt sure profits for both producers and businessmen. Manaus experienced significant transformations, marked by large construction works and improvements, as a result of the luxury and wealth provided by rubber extraction, trading and exportation. At the time, European customs and traditions were part of everyday population´s life. From 1907 on, with the coming of Asian rubber( which was produced from rationally planned plantations) into international consumer markets, exportation of local products began to decline, announcing a bleak future. The economy began to downfall ( formely enjoying an exclusive position ) as a result of the plummeting in exports of the product, determining the closure of an important cycle of progress and submerging the city into deep oblivion.

 Zoológico do CIGS

Amazon leopards, cougars, sucçuaranas, jaguars, Moorish cats, monkeys of several species, boa constrictors, anacondas, alligators, deers, macaws and Amazon hawks are some of the species found at the CIGS (Jungle Warfare Instruction Center) Zoo. Maintained by the Brazilian Army, the zoo occupies an area of 30 thousand square meters including facilities especially designed to shelter 300 regional animals of 73 different species. It was built in 1967 with the initial objective of supplying information on the Amazon fauna to the students of the Jungle Warfare Training Program.

 São Sebastião Church

Built under the orientation of Gesualdo Marchetti de Lucas, in 1888, the São Sebastião Church has a neoclassic style, with some medieval elements and European panels and stained glass windows, which, following the style of that period, decorate its interior. The paintings, covering the ceiling up to the altar, including the dome and the walls, still intact and were brought in from Italy and fixed to the ceiling. These paintings were made by Silvio Centofanti, Francisco Campanella and Ballerini.

 Liberty Palace

Known as Paço Municipal, its true name is Paço da Liberdade and its construction was initiated in 1874. The building was used by the Provincial Government, in 1879, and soon after, with the Proclamation of the Republic it became the administrative seat of the Republican Government. In 1917, it became the Municipal Government headquarters. The construction façade is one of the first examples of neoclassic architecture in Manaus. The building has only one floor divided into three sections. The central part has a porch with two columns and two Tuscan style pilasters, where the escutcheon of the Municipality of Manaus can be seen. Located in front of Dom Pedro II Square, Paço da Liberdade is one of the most important constructions of the oldest historical site of Manaus, landmark of the luxury and wealth, provided by the rubber boom period.

 Branco e Silva Craft Center

Any typically regional product, can be found in this Center. It is possible to follow the production of parts, as well as acquiring any product. Do not forget to prove the delicious local food.

 Presidente Figueredo

Dream yourself in a place with: Forest, rivers, waterfalls and rapids, all part of a magic world reserved by nature just for you. Presidente Figueiredo was created with a natural vocation for tourism. The land of Waterfalls also offers hiking trails, visit to caves, boat rides on Balbina Lake and the Hydroelectric Power Station among many options that include ecotourism and adventure. The Municipal Center of Presidente Figueiredo was founded in 1981 and was named as compliments to the first president of the province of Amazonas, João Baptista de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha (1798-1861).

 Manaus Free Trade Zone

The Manaus Free Trade Zone has determined a new pulse in the economy of the area. Created in 1957, as a free trade area of imports and exports, represented an answer to the challenge about formulating politics based on a self-sustained development. And, it was capable to allow the economic integration of the Amazon, without damage to his environmental patrimony. More than that, the Manaus Free Trade Zone has promoted the effective entrance of Manaus in the modern industrial production and its reentry in the national scenery. Besides an extraordinary stock of natural resources, it represents about 20 % of the planet´s fresh water reservation, a big genetic bank of unknown value, gas and petroleum, the landscape of the Industrial Pole of Manaus is a show of balance between the technological progresses and the preservation of the environment. Manaus is home to sophisticated technology and communication industries, such as SHARP, NOKIA, PHILIPS, and SONY.
