Attractions Events Photos Hotels Country Info

Natal is know as the city of the dunes. It is a city of extraordinary beaches, dotted with tiny fishing villages. The most sought-after beaches are Genipabu e Cotovelo. There are also delightful fresh-water beaches along the Potengi River, and falls besides the beaches and reefs that forms a natural aquarium. Natal is the muse of sunny summers, the symbol of harmony and youthful pleasures. It possesses the driest and mildest climate of the country because of the breeze that it receives constantly from the Atlantic Ocean. The average temperature is about 28°C and the period of insolation is almost 10 hours daily. Reis Magos Fort, the birthplace of the city must also be visited.

  Attractions
 Genipabu

Genipabu has long been the favorite of the local Brazilians, and gained real fame when the soap opera 'Tieta' concluded its story in this beautiful beach. Only 30 km from Natal and the airport, this is a convenient, yet secluded, location to enjoy your vacation. Famous for its dunes, this is one of the most developed beach resort areas on the coast.

 Fort of the Wise Kings

Every old fort should look like this. In a world where so many old strongholds have been swallowed up by the cities they once protected, this bastion stands proud and alone on the reefs of the tip of Natal. It is divided from the mainland by a sand strip, which in high tide, sinks able to reach 3 feet under the surface. Inside the fort the function of each room is carefully spelled out in Portuguese and English. There's a chapel in the middle of it. The small museum in the officer's quarters has a nicely done display on the explorer Vasco de Gama, but disappointingly little in comparision wih the fort itself, which saw action at least once, when the Dutch occupied it, between 1633 and 1654. From the ramparts, the view of the city's skyscrapers and dunes on the north can't be beat. The name of the fort translates into English as Fort of the Wise Kings - the three kings of the East, present at the Nativity.

 Redinha

When you cross Potengi River, you find Redinha Beach, where you have a privileged sight of The Three Wise Men Fortress, the most important monument of Natal.

 Center of Tourism

The Center of tourism had functioned as a House of Detention until the decade of 60. It was inaugurated in 1976 and is located on the top of a hill with a privileged sight of some urban beaches in Natal and part of the city. Besides providing touristic information, it has many little stores installed in what was once the prison cells, and filled with the most varied craftsmanship (carnauba fiber, sisal, ceramics, embroiderings, typical products and foods...), an art gallery, an antiquary, a night club and a restaurant.

 Cotovelo

Cotovelo beach is located just fifteen minutes from Natal, in the south way. If you ever get there to visit, be sure to bring your sandboard and your bodyboard. This beach has great waves for body surfing as well as excellent dunes to sand boarding

 Barreira do Inferno Launching Center

The Barreira do Inferno (Hell's Barrier) Launching Center was the place from where the first Brazilian rocket was launched. This region and the center itself got their names from the fiery colors reflected by the cliffs next to the beach at sunset when seen from the sea. Built in 1964, the center had an important role in the development of Brazilian space technology. Nowadays, one of its main activities is to track Ariane vehicles launched from the Space Center at Kourou in the French Guyana.

 Pirangi

Here is where you can find the biggest cashew-tree in the world and natural pools by the reefs.

 Câmara Cascudo Museum

It contains an anthropology heritage, pieces from the popular culture of Rio Grande do Norte, pieces of sacred art, lacing artwork, fossiles and skeletons of animals, shells of the region, a reconstitution of a sambaqui, an old sugar-cane mill and a miniplant of xylite, ore explored in the state of Rio Grande do Norte which is used in the warlike industry and in the manufacture of light bulbs.
